Nobody learns security by reading about it. You need a machine you are allowed to break, and you need it to be a machine that cannot reach anything that matters. That is what you build here. It starts with one line in Task Manager, because if that line says the wrong thing then nothing else in this segment will work and no amount of reinstalling will help. Then a hypervisor, then Kali from an installation image with a Debian 13 profile, twenty-five gigabytes and guided partitioning, a password you set yourself, and a first snapshot before you touch anything. One of the early lessons is designed to fail. If you are on an Apple Silicon laptop you will download the wrong image, build a machine from it, and get "no bootable device found" — and then learn to check what your own machine is before you download anything, which is a habit that comes back twice more in this segment and will come back for the rest of your career. A career changer from journalism lost a full lesson to exactly that. Then Linux, for somebody who has never used it. What a virtual machine actually is. You back the machine up somewhere that is not your laptop, then rebuild it from your own notes with the browser closed, and time both. Then you write the scripts that take a change back out, and the runbook that means none of this is in your head. You finish with your own machine, your own snapshot discipline, and one document from which a stranger could rebuild the whole thing. Every lab carries the same standing rules, and they are not decoration: permission first, respect scope, never production, always staging.
